McAllen Safe Stay Commitment

The safety and well-being of the community and its visitors is top priority, and it’s one of the reasons McAllen is a top tourist destination for conventions, festivals, youth sports and Mexico leisure travelers.

McAllen’s civic, business and association communities have diligently adhered to industry standards for health and safety protocols, and the McAllen Safe Stay Commitment is our way of communicating that message and welcoming visitors.

McAllen’s Safe Stay Commitment is a pledge to tourists that McAllen will provide a safe and welcoming environment at its airport, hotels, retail businesses, restaurants, convention facilities, attractions and other places frequented by guests.

McAllen Safe Stay partners are committed to the following:

  • Use face covering
  • Practice social distancing
  • Provide hand sanitizer
  • Follow CDC cleaning protocols
  • Implement contactless payment when possible
  • General COVID-19 awareness training for employees

The McAllen Chamber of Commerce continues to be a resource for the local business community and its visitors. The Visitors Center is operating under normal business hours, and patrons must wear a face cover when entering the building. Meetings with Chamber staff are available by appointment only. Please call 956-682-2871 for information or to schedule an appointment. Business resources can be found online at

The hotel industry has a longstanding commitment to cleanliness and safety for employees and guests. The commitment continues during the public health crisis. Please see below for additional details from the American Hotel & Lodging Association and from individual hotel brands.

The restaurant industry has an outstanding track record of protecting employees and patrons. To ensure everyone’s safety as they welcome guests back into their dining rooms, the Texas Restaurant Association has created The Texas Restaurant Promise. See below for participating restaurants.

Retail is a major economic driver for McAllen, and it is imperative visitors feel safe while shopping. Following the state’s occupancy guidelines, retailers are operating at 75% capacity, requiring employees and customers to wear a face-covering while maintaining six feet of social distance. All newly opened businesses and services are subject to the recommended minimum standard health protocols outlined by the Department of State Health Services.

More than 832,000 travelers flew in and out of the McAllen International Airport in 2019 and the health and safety of their passengers, staff, and partners have remained a top priority. The Airport is committed to following strict industry standards and has gone above and beyond to help ease travelers’ concerns for their health and safety by adding enhanced and more frequent cleaning procedures especially in “high-touch” or frequently visited areas, strategically placed disinfecting wipe stations (i.e. baggage claim area & security checkpoints) and conveniently located hand sanitizer dispensers, easy-to-see social distancing chair, and floor markings, clear and informative safety reminders displayed on LED screens throughout the airport as well as CDC Guidance announcements in both English and Spanish reminding travelers of best practices to stay safe. As an added layer of safety, convenience, and courtesy for travelers, MFE has also added three cell phone and/or tablet charging stations (each with 8 lockers) that use UV-C to sanitize your electronics while charging. MFE continues to work closely with the CDC and Hidalgo County Health Department to monitor the situation during this time, making any adjustments as necessary or required.
