Public art enhances McAllen’s already vibrant natural background. The Downtown wall murals and the powerful painting by world-renowned muralist Irving Cano publicly displayed at Palms Crossing Shopping Center are just the start. Even irrigation standpipes make the perfect “canvas” for art in McAllen. From abstract sculptures to art tucked into nature trails you will find McAllen’s outdoor art on display for all to enjoy. Follow our street art guide and paint the town red!
Start your artistic exploration with some traditional south Texas breakfast tacos from Taco Palenque. Then head to Downtown McAllen where there is a multitude of outdoor wall murals that represent the unique culture and artistic vibe of the city. Spend some time exploring them all and find that Instagrammable moment you’ve been searching for!
Created live at McAllen’s five-day art & music festival, MXLAN, Oaxacan artist Irving Cano’s 20’ x 20’ portrait is not to be missed. Stroll through the walkable Palms Crossing Shopping Center, pick up a sweet treat at the RGV Cupcake Factory, and look for the memorable art piece.
The standing irrigation pipes along Bicentennial Boulevard were a functional necessity for the area, but Keep McAllen Beautiful saw the perfect backdrop for public art. Drive along the boulevard for a quick glimpse or walk the trails for an up-close look at these utilitarian objects enveloped in rich mosaics. While you are on the north side of town stop in at Earthborn for an afternoon pick-me-up of fresh cold-pressed juice.
Unique and striking sculptures dot the lush landscape from one end of the city to the other. World-renowned Mexican sculptor, Sebastian has worked on display in cities around the world, including Mexico City, Jerusalem, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Venice, and MCALLEN, to name a few! You can find his urban monuments at McAllen City Hall, the McAllen International Airport, the McAllen Convention Center District, and the International Museum of Art & Science.
Combine public art into your nature adventure in McAllen? Of course, if venturing through Quinta Mazatlán. Nestled in the backdrop of this Urban Sanctuary you will find the Forest Sculpture Trail. Meticulously created by local artist, Douglas Clark, each sculpture provides insight into the natural history of the Rio Grande Valley. Wind down your day of cultural fulfillment with a glass of wine and a fabulous locally sourced dinner from HouseWine.
